A while back (i.e. 2006) Sting released an album titled “Songs from the Labyrinth” – a classical album in which he and Edin Karamazov performed several of Sting’s old pop songs as well as covers of the madrigal music of John Dowland (1563-1626). Oh yeah, and they’re playing the lute. That’s right, Sting released an album of lute music. Several articles quote Sting as saying the album was a “labor of love.”

Ever think the real reason for this album was a bet between Sting and his buddies – hey guys, I bet I could release an album of lute music and people will still buy it. Because I’m fucking Sting. Loser buys me a rubber duckie!

Well played, sir.

I have been informed by interested parties *you know who you are* that I might be a little behind the times on some of the music I share with you all. Well, I’m here to offer this disclaimer:

I do not listen to the radio. I hardly ever listen to new music online. I don’t have TV so I rarely hear songs that way either.

How do I add new music to my playlists then, you might ask. Well, there are times when I will hear a song here and there – on the few TV shows I do watch on Netflix, over a loudspeaker at a store or a mall, when I’m driving in a car with friends who listen to the radio, following suggestions of people who tell me I simply must listen to so-and-so, or listening to suggestions YouTube gives me when looking for songs discovered. By the time these songs to reach my ears, however, they are generally not new and shiny anymore. So if I post a song on here that I am newly enamored with and it happens to be ancient to people who actually live in current society … deal, people.

Also, a side note I would like to share. I am completely in love with the show Bones. A friend kept saying I needed to watch it, I would love it, it was so great, etc. I was like, sure sure, I’ll add that to the long list of TV shows I need to watch but never get around to. Well, I finally got around to it and am now watching the first season on Netflix. I believe they just wrapped up season 5, so I’ve got lots of catching up to do. Which I am more than happy to do. This show is like CSI and The X-Files had a love child. And what a beautiful baby. I get to watch these fantastic people solve crimes with all the grisly details I loved in CSI, and BONUS I now have another show with seasons-long sexual tension between the two main characters. Sweet.

Oh – and it’s got great music … which I now share … whether they’re new or not

A few new favorites that I just can’t listen to enough

Word Up by Willis *featured in episode 707 of CSI – “Post Mortem” … you might remember watching Hodges getting his groove on to this little diddy

Fireflies by Owl City *I just love this song, I think it’s the lyrics that get me. They’re just so wonderful.

Here’s the lyrics for you … enjoy.

You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep

‘Cause they’d fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You’d think me rude
But I would just stand and stare

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems

‘Cause I’d get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance

A fox trot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball that’s just hanging by a thread

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

Leave my door open just a crack
(Please take me away from here)
‘Cause I feel like such an insomniac
(Please take me away from here)
Why do I tire of counting sheep
(Please take me away from here)
When I’m far too tired to fall asleep

To ten million fireflies
I’m weird ’cause I hate goodbyes
I got misty eyes as they said farewell

But I’ll know where several are
If my dreams get real bizarre
‘Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams

There … I hope that saves somebody hours of time wasted digging around on tons of other sites looking for some of this info … I’m a little surprised that with the popularity of the show that nobody has made a site that has the songs listed. Sure, there’s the Torchwood Music Project, a so-called informational site where people can discuss/post songs from the show, but wow, does that site suck. If you don’t believe me, check it out and just try and find names of songs from shows. In a reasonable amount of time. I dare you.

Those of you who’ve seen The Devil Wears Prada have a bit of an idea about what might go on behind the scenes at a big fashion magazine. Let me just say, according to this documentary about the September issue of Vogue magazine, TDWP wasn’t far off.

The character of Miranda Priestly, played wonderfully by Meryl Streept was even based on the real-life editor of Vogue, Anna Wintour.

I normally dislike documentaries, never finding them all too entertaining. But now and then, I find one that actually keeps me interested. This was one of those rare few. I don’t know if somebody not interested in the slightest in the publishing world or fashion would find it that fun, but I’m sure this wouldn’t really be in their radar anyway. My interest lies more on the publishing side than the fashion, and my interest in photography made the bits about the photo shoots really great in this film.

The movie didn’t really go into too much depth, and with a run-time of only 90 minutes, it’s understandable. But you get enough to see a glimpse of how the publishing works, the power-plays between members of the team, the disappointment of having your ideas shot down, the excitement of getting something you truly love into the magazine, etc.

And my favorite part of this movie? The soundtrack. They picked wonderful music for this film that I immediately had to go online and find. I’ve included my favorites below. Enjoy!

That Home (Reprise) – The Cinematic Orchestra

Destroy Everything You Touch – Ladytron

Around the Bend – The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Burn It All Down – VHS or Beta

Swisha – Ratatat

Nostrand – Ratatat

Don’t You Worry – Jim Noir

And in honor of the fun soundtrack from The September Issue, I thought I’d give you a list of some of my other favorite movie soundtracks (with a small sample of each) …

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The Piano

Chocolat

Serenity / the Firefly series

Catch Me If You Can
